Coheed & Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez Talks ‘Kill Audio,’ His New ‘Rock N’ Roll Ghostbusters’ Comic

Kill AudioCoheed & Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez pleasantly surprised a lot of comic book fans with his 2007 miniseries “The Amory Wars” that combined elements of the band’s music with an accessible story that was well-received by readers. Now, Sanchez is getting ready to launch his sophomore effort in the comics world with “Kill Audio,” a six-part series he’s co-writing with fiancee Chondra Echert.

While the official synopsis for the series as the tale of an immortal troll named Kill Audio on a quest for the meaning of life (and more specifically, why his life can’t seem to end), Sanchez told MTV News that the Boom Studios miniseries also serves as an ode to the friends and family he’s often been kept away from while touring. In fact, it’s no coincidence that “Kill Audio” sounds a lot like “Claudio” when said aloud.

“Yeah, it was either that or calling him ‘Dirty Sanchez,’” joked the musician, who offered up his own take on the tone of the series, calling it “a rock ‘n roll ‘Ghostbusters.’”

Set in a surreal world where creativity is regulated, Sanchez said their protagonist embarks on a quest to find out why he’s immortal, but finds himself challenged by various obstacles along the way — including a character who constantly attempts to “fix” his immortality… by killing him.

“It’s very much a comedy,” explained Sanchez. “[Kill Audio] doesn’t understand his role in the world and wants to know what purpose he’s supposed to serve by being immortal.”

According to Sanchez, Coheed & Cambria fans are likely to find an Easter Egg or two among the series’ supporting cast, too.

“Kill Audio” #1 hits shelves in October with a story by Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert, and art by Mr. Sheldon. Boom Studios will offer an early peek at the series during this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. Sanchez will be on hand at the Boom Studios booth Saturday, July 25, to sign copies of the preview issue, with vinyl “Kill Audio” figures also for sale during signings.

Comic Con ’09 – BOOM! Studios / Booth #2543

One of the most unique and powerful minds in rock and comics unleashes possibly the most provocative new comic of 2009: KILL AUDIO! Shipping this October from BOOM! Studios, fans can get a first look at KILL AUDIO this July at Comic-Con International, when Claudio Sanchez signs the KILL AUDIO PREVIEW BOOK available only at the BOOM! Studios Booth #2543. KILL AUDIO follows the adventures of an immortal little troll who struggles to find purpose in a land where creativity is a controlled substance. When musical creativity spirals into chaos, KILL AUDIO discovers his life mission.
